Are the winding methods of brushless motors and brushed motors the same?

Release time:2026-05-20 popularity: Article editor:NOYU

Brushless motors and brushed motors have always been topics that many people like to discuss. Besides the common comparisons such as functions and features, the winding methods are also frequently mentioned. So, are the winding methods of brushless motors and brushed motors the same? What are the similarities and differences? Let NOYU simply introduce them to you below!

brushless motors

The winding methods for brushless motors and brushed motors are different. Below is a detailed comparison of these two types of motor winding methods:
I. The fundamental differences
1.Brushless motor: It uses mechanical commutation, with the magnetic poles remaining stationary while the coils rotate. Through carbon brushes and commutators, the direction of the current is alternately changed during the rotation of the coils, thereby driving the motor to rotate.
2. Brushless Motor: It uses electronic commutation, with the coils remaining stationary while the magnetic poles rotate. A set of electronic components, through Hall elements, detect the position of the permanent magnet's magnetic poles and promptly switch the current direction in the coils to generate the correct magnetic force to drive the motor.
II. Differences in Wrapping Methods
1. Brushless motor winding method:
Parallel winding method: Connect the ends of each coil to the brushes respectively, and then connect all the brushes to a direct current power supply. This method is simple, but the motor efficiency is relatively low.
Series winding method: Connect one end of each coil to the other end of the next coil to form a series circuit. Then connect the voltage between the two ends to the brush. This method has a high current density and high efficiency, but the winding is relatively complex.
2. Method for winding brushless motor:
Star winding (Y-type winding): Each section of a coil is connected to two ports of the adjacent coil, forming a star-shaped structure. The length of the wire used for each coil and the voltage are the same, so the motor operates stably. It is usually used in motors with fewer coils per phase.
Triangle winding (△ winding): Each coil is connected to the other end of the adjacent coil, forming a triangular structure. The voltage of each coil is different, and voltage imbalance may occur during high-speed operation. It is suitable for motors with a large number of coils per phase.
Wave winding (λ-type winding): Each coil is connected at both ends to two ports of adjacent coils, forming a wave structure. To ensure current balance, complex methods are needed to calculate the voltage of each coil. Winding is difficult, but it can improve the efficiency and output torque of the motor. It is suitable for motors with a large number of coils per phase.
III. Characteristics and Differences
Brushless motor: Simple structure, low manufacturing cost. The carbon brushes are prone to wear and require regular replacement. The alternating connection and disconnection of the carbon brushes and the coil terminals will generate sparks that can interfere with electronic equipment.
Brushless motor: Electronic commutation, no carbon brush wear problem, long lifespan. High efficiency, large output torque. Suitable for high-speed and high-precision control applications.
